Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers opt out of chase for Arsenal man

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has reported that Championship pair Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers were looking at the possibility of signing Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, but have since cooled their interest and he is now set to remain at the Emirates Stadium.

It has been reported by The Sun that Championship duo Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers were interested in Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez ahead of the new Championship season, before dropping their interest in the Argentine as they couldn’t commit to lodging a “decent cash offer” for the 26-year-old.

Leeds United have been heavily linked with a number of goalkeepers over the course of the summer transfer window, with even Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon being linked with a crazy move to Elland Road this summer. Question marks over the futures of ‘keepers Kiko Casilla and Bailey Peacock-Farrell could still see the Whites move for another ‘keeper, especially with Peacock-Farrell attracting interest from Burnley.

Blackburn Rovers have also been in the market for another goalkeeper, having let David Raya make a move to fellow Championship side Brentford earlier this summer. However, since then, they have brought in Brighton and Hove Albion’s Christian Walton, but they could still look to bring in another man in between the sticks.

Arsenal’s Emiliano Martinez was an option both clubs reportedly looked at, but after cooling their interest in the Gunners ‘keeper, he is set to remain at the club. Martinez is expected to be the club’s number two option in between the sticks with Petr Cech retiring and David Ospina leaving for Napoli.

He spent the second half of last season on loan in the Championship with Reading, keeping five clean sheets in 18 games as Jose Gomes’ side steered themselves away from the relegation zone.
