Former Ipswich Town, Charlton Athletic, Sunderland and Derby County striker announces retirement

Former Ipswich Town, Charlton Athletic, Sunderland and Derby County striker Darren Bent has confirmed that he has retired from football at the age of 35.

Darren Bent has been without a club since the end of the 2017/18 season when he was released by Derby County. Now, at the age of 35, he has announced that he has retired from the professional game.

Speaking on his Instagram on Thursday, Bent thanked Ipswich Town for giving him his breakthrough into football and former Charlton Athletic boss Alan Curbishley for giving him his first chance in the Premier League. Bent said:

“Well the end of this chapter has come to an end, I feel extremely proud and privileged to have played for some of the clubs I have and share the pitch with players I played with and against.

“Special mention for @ipswichtown and manager George Burley for giving me the support and opportunity to make my dreams become a reality, and also @cafcofficial and manager Alan Curbishley for believing I could succeed in the premier league.

“Thank you to all the people who supported me over the years through good and bad times and kept my head. Really excited about the next Chapter. Thank you again.”

Bent started out his career at Ipswich Town, joining the Tractor Boys as a 14-year-old in 1998, before making his first senior appearance at 17. The striker went on to score 55 goals in 141 appearances for Ipswich, before moving to Charlton Athletic in 2005. He made the step up into the top flight with the Addicks and enjoyed a thoroughly successful time at The Valley, scoring an impressive 36 goals in 77 appearances, leaving after two seasons.

He went on to play for Spurs (79 games, 25 goals and seven assists), Sunderland (63 games, 36 goals and four assists), Aston Villa (72 games, 25 goals and three assists), Fulham (loan – 30 games, six goals and two assists), Brighton (loan – five games, two goals), Derby County (86 games, 28 goals and four assists) and Burton Albion (loan – 15 games, two goals).
