Portsmouth complete deal for League One winger – Lowe to Wigan Athletic all but confirmed

With reports claiming that Portsmouth attacker Jamal Lowe’s £3 million switch to Championship side Wigan Athletic all but confirmed, Pompey have moved quickly to bring in his successor, signing Burton Albion’s Marcus Harness.

Portsmouth have confirmed on their club website that they have completed the signing of winger Marcus Harness from fellow League One side Burton Albion, coming in to seemingly replace the outgoing Jamal Lowe.

Harness has joined Pompey from Burton on a three-year contract, with the deal having the option of a further year extension included in it as well.

Harness scored six goals and provided seven assists across all competitions as Burton finished in 9th place.

Speaking to the club website upon the announcement, Harness has said that he felt the chance to join Portsmouth was a chance he could not afford to pass up, having spent his entire career since the age of 14 playing for Burton Albion.

Harness said: “I’ve been at Burton since I was 14 and now it’s nice to move on to the next step in my career. I loved my time there, but sometimes you get opportunities that you just can’t turn down – I’ve played at Fratton Park before and know the size of this club.

“The fans here are amazing and I remember watching them in the Premier League when I was younger, so this felt like a chance to progress.

“I’d heard murmurs for a few weeks and then things happened literally overnight. It’s all gone so fast. It’s been a bit mad for me, but I’m just happy to be here and am really excited about what’s to come.

“I try to create and score goals. I want to get on the ball and make things happen – hopefully I can do a lot of that here.

“The gaffer thinks I can fit in to what he’s trying to do that, so I want to get into the team and help them to push on. I know this club should be higher than they currently are and will be working hard with the rest of the lads to make that happen.”

Harness came through the academy at Burton Albion and made his breakthrough into senior football at the tail end of the 2013/14 season. Since then, he has spent time on loan with Aldershot (two games) and Port Vale (42 games, two goals and five assists), also going on to play 83 times for the Brewers.
