Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has made no secret of the fact he has been keen to bring midfielder Jonny Williams back to the club on a permanent basis, with it being well documented that he has been training with the Addicks since his release from Crystal Palace. And now, Bowyer has got his man.

Charlton Athletic have today (Thursday) confirmed the signing of free agent midfielder Jonny Williams, after his contract with Premier League side Crystal Palace expired at the end of the season.

The Welshman has put pen to paper at The Valley, signing on a one-year deal (with the option of a second year) having spent the second half of last season on loan with the club, playing an important role in their promotion to the Championship.

Speaking after the announcement of his move, Williams said to the club website that he is happy to back at a club where it feels like home, saying:

“I’m over the moon to be back with this group of lads, the manager and the staff. I feel at home here, so I’m delighted to sign and I’m really excited about playing for this team in the Championship.”

Addicks boss Lee Bowyer was also thoroughly happy with the arrival of Williams, revealing that the 25-year-old has taken a hefty pay cut to return to the club this summer.

“I’m delighted to be able to get him back. Jonny, to be fair to him, has dropped his wage a hell of a lot to come here and I’m grateful to him for doing that and I think that just shows how much he enjoyed last season with us. Everyone made him feel welcome from the fans to the players. It’s a perfect fit.”
