Cardiff join race for Middlesbrough striker linked with Sheffield United and Bristol City

According to The Northern Echo, Cardiff City are in the hunt for a new striker, and have identified Middlesbrough forward Britt Assombalonga as a potential target.

Cardiff have returned to the Championship after just one year back in the Premier League. Neil Warnock’s side will be hoping to gain promotion back to the big time at the first time of asking, and they are looking to bolster their attacking options to better their chances.

One potential target is Britt Assombalonga of Middlesbrough, who could be available this summer for somewhere in the region of £15 million – the same fee Boro paid to Nottingham Forest originally in 2017.

Since arriving at The Riverside, the DR Congo international has scored 29 goals in 86 games, over one in three. But the striker boasts a better record when considering Assombalonga has started 56 games of those games for Boro, meaning better than one goal in two.

Warnock currently has Bobby Reid, Callum Paterson, Danny Ward and Kenneth Zahore at his disposal up front. Omar Bogle and Rhys Healey are also returning from loan spells with Portsmouth and MK Dons respectively, and both could play a part next season.

Cardiff aren’t the only club tracking Assombalonga however, and they have joined a long list of suitors including Scottish Premier League champions Celtic, newly promoted Premier League side Sheffield United, and Championship trio Bristol City, Fulham and Nottingham Forest.

Boro Head Coach Jonathan Woodgate would likely want a replacement lined up before allowing Assombalonga to depart however, with only Ashley Fletcher and Rudy Gestede the other forwards at the club at present.
