Barnsley and Colchester United battling it out for highly-rated winger

Barnsley and Colchester United are battling it out to sign free agent winger Reggie Young.

The 20-year-old is a man in-demand at the moment, according to a report by Football Insider.

Young spent last season on loan in the Southern League Premier Division South with Farnborough from Woking and scored 10 goals for the Hampshire side, as well as gaining seven assists.

He left when his contract at now National League side Woking expired in June in the hope of a move to the Football League.

Young joined Woking in October 2017 having previously been on the books as a youngster at AFC Wimbledon. He went onto make a handful of appearances for the Cardinals before his loan spell at Farnborough in the last campaign.

He has spent pre-season at Colchester United as John McGreal’s side decide over offering him a contract. He has played twice for the U’s Under-23’s this summer.

However, the League Two side will face competition for his signature from Barnsley as the Tykes look to bolster their youth ranks before the start of the season.

Daniel Stendel is reportedly ready to offer Young a two-year deal to fend off interest from Colchester.

The Yorkshire side have been busy this summer in the transfer window as they prepare for life back in the Championship. They have signed the likes of Mallik Wilks, Aapo Halme and Toby Sibbick with their recruitment policy evidently targeting young players.
