Port Vale monitoring former Crewe Alexandra prospect

Port Vale are weighing up a move for trialist Alex Hurst, according to StokeonTrentLive

The 19-year-old has been training with the League Two side and has caught the eye of manager John Askey with impressive displays against Leek Town and Nottingham Forest under-23s.

A product of Crewe Alexandra’s academy, the energetic midfielder is on the books of National League North outfit Bradford (Park Avenue) and has established himself as one of the sixth tier’s most promising young talents. He was brought to West Yorkshire by former Bradford boss Mark Bower, who swooped to sign Hurst from Matlock Town in October 2018.

The versatile teenager can operate in central midfield, at full-back, as a winger and even as a second striker, but has been utilised on the left flank by Askey. The 54-year-old Vale boss has discussed the possibility of Hurst making the step up to professional football and signing a contract at Vale Park:

“Alex has done well again, he did well when we played Nottingham Forest. He has a lot of ability. He is only just 19 so he is one that might be worth having a punt on. But he is a Bradford (Park Avenue) player at the moment so we would need to speak to them.

“It would be nice to be able to give him the opportunity but it depends on Bradford (Park Avenue).”

Although a deal is far from set in stone, it certainly appears that Hurst has made a good impression at the League Two club, who will be heading into the 2019/20 campaign on a reduced budget. Askey has insisted that this will determine the type of player that the club will recruit:

“It all has to fit into the budget. Obviously the budget is not as big as it was last season so it is tight. But that is why you have to bring certain players in to fit into the squad because of the money constraints.”
