Leeds United expecting mercurial playmaker back on Monday

Who? No, really, who? That was pretty much what Leeds United fans said when the club’s intentions to sign Samu Saiz became clear. It didn’t take long for these fans to cotton on.

When Leeds United signed Samu Saiz, and after fans had undertaken their own due diligence of Internet and YouTube searches, there was hope that the Whites had landed the answer to the problems that had plagued their search ball a playmaking #10.

It certainly looked that way in the first half of the 2017/18 season when the talented Spaniard played with a certain sense of pomp, imperious displays of skill and football there for all to see. The diminutive Spanish wizard was lighting up the pitch at times.

Before the turn of 2018, Saiz had five league goals and five league assists to his name, as well as a further four goals in the Carabao Cup. Suddenly £3million, or a shade over, seemed a drop in the ocean.

Yet, there were hiccups such as the rash moment in the FA Cup loss to Newport when Saiz spat at an opponent, the six-game ban coinciding with the now all too familiar second part of the season slide from the Whites.

Yet under Marcelo Bielsa, the yoke of Paul Heckingbottom cast off, Samu looked back to his mercurial self in the first half of the 2018/19 campaign. Four assists flowed, but there were rumblings that something wasn’t right.

That proved to be the case when news broke that, due to family issues, the Whites had negotiated a return to Spain for Saiz and a half-season loan deal with Madrid side Getafe. That has just ended, and the Spaniard is not being kept on by the Madrid side.

With family issues paramount to his leaving, one would assume that Saiz will be looking to stay in Spain. However, that may change in the short-term as discussed by BBC Radio Leeds’ Adam Pope in a reply to a question from a Leeds United fan on Twitter:

Monday morning up at Thorp Arch will be interesting should Saiz not have a new club sorted out by then. There is little doubt that the mercurial Spaniard has the talent to really make a difference to Leeds United – that much has been seen and seen often in the games that he’s played.

However, being brought back out of contractual obligation rather than through personal choice would seem to indicate that it wouldn’t be a mutually agreeable set of circumstances. Nonetheless, it is Monday that will give Whites fans the answers that they are looking towards.
