Lee Bowyer provides latest on Charlton Athletic’s hopes of signing ex-Crystal Palace midfielder

Over the course of the summer transfer window, Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has made no secret of the fact that he is keen for Jonny Williams to return to the club on a permanent basis after his contract with Crystal Palace expired earlier this summer.

Jonny Williams enjoyed a thoroughly successful loan spell with Charlton Athletic over the second half of last season, helping the Addicks win a place in the Championship via the League One play-offs.

But, despite Williams spending the majority of the summer with Charlton and the club is determined to bring him back to The Valley for next season, Bowyer has told the South London Press and Mercury that a deal for the Welshman is no closer, adding that his wages at Palace are an obstacle.

The former Newcastle United midfielder has said he is willing to be patient with Williams over a deal.

“Jonny, it is what it is. We all know the situation regarding Jonny. Yes, we would like to have him but the situation at tough. His wage he was on at Palace was big and we don’t have that. We have to be patient with him.

“It’s going to be difficult next week. I spoke to him yesterday about it. We’re playing Tuesday and Wednesday. So, he might have a few days off. He played quite a bit through the summer with Wales so he had a shorter break than everybody anyway.

He said ‘do you mind if I have a few days off,’ and I said ‘Jonny, you’re not our player! If you want to have a week off, that’s your choice.’

“He’s a lovely lad and really respectful but he won’t be in on Tuesday and Wednesday.”
