Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City linked defender completes League One switch

Centre-back Jordan Willis had been heavily linked with a number of Championship sides after it emerged that he would not be signing a new contract with Coventry City.

But now, despite Coventry City manager Mark Robins revealing that Jordan Willis was determined to make a move to the Championship, it has now been confirmed that he will be remaining in League One.

It was confirmed on Saturday that Jordan Willis had completed a move to League One side Sunderland, putting pen to paper on a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light. The likes of Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City were all linked with a move for Willis this summer, but it is Sunderland where he will be playing his football from now on.

Upon the announcement of the transfer, Willis said that he is excited to get started at his new club, saying he is happy to be part of the journey to get Sunderland back to “where they deserve to be”, after two consecutive relegations and play-off final heartbreak last season.

“I’m buzzing to be signing for a club of this stature. When a club like Sunderland comes in for you, you just want to be part of the journey of getting them back to where they deserve to be. You dream of playing in front of big crowds as a kid, so I can’t wait to get started and get out on the pitch.”

Sunderland fans will be hoping Willis settles in quickly and enjoys a successful pre-season as the Black Cats embark on a new season that they hope will bring promotion this time around.
