What is next for Preston after the upcoming sale of Callum Robinson?

Preston North End have announced via the club’s official website that they have now accepted a bid from a Premier League team for forward Callum Robinson.

While the identity of the unknown club still remains speculated, it has been widely reported that newly promoted Sheffield United is Robinson’s new destination, but nothing has been confirmed officially.

The 24 year-old forward was Preston’s top goal scorer last season with 13 goals, despite being injured for almost four months with a hamstring injury, suffered against Blackburn Rovers.

It was a season where Robinson repaid the faith given to him by Preston, who previously loaned the midfielder twice from his previous club Aston Villa, before eventually signing him on a permanent deal back in 2016.

But now it has to be asked how exactly they can progress without the star man.

His upcoming arrival in the Premier League means he is now the second player in recent seasons who has departed Preston to join the top flight, with Jordan Hugill leaving to join West Ham United back in 2018.

The sale of Hugill for £10m surely gives Preston an example of how to reinvest the fee they are going to receive for Robinson, as it has consistently been contested by the North End faithful that the money from that sale was not used to improve the team out on the pitch, and rather to introduce electronic turnstiles at Deepdale ahead of last season.

Regardless of how significant the fee for Robinson will be, it certainly needs to be used by Preston in the correct way. For the past two seasons the club has had a chance at gaining the long-awaited Premier League promotion, with the 2017-18 campaign seeing them finish just one point behind 6th, and Robinson has been a vital player in Preston’s recent steady Championship seasons. Preston need to add the quality and skill back into the squad that they will lose with Robinson’s departure.

However the success and consistency that the forward has brought to the club has certainly warranted his obvious dream move to England’s highest division, and it has been rewarded by Preston not getting in the way of the move.

Preston are also not without their options for the left wing position, with Robinson’s Irish International team-mate Sean Maguire impressing numerous times from that area of the pitch. His departure also frees up a chance for both Billy Bodin and Josh Harrop to cement their names on the Preston team sheet, after they both spent the majority of last season out with injury.

While Robinson leaving is naturally something that Preston need to address, fans of the club can certainly take confidence in the fact that while he was injured, the team still went on a 13 game unbeaten run in the Championship last season.
