We reported here on The72 that free agent midfielder Danny Guthrie – formerly of Blackburn Rovers, Reading and Newcastle United – was on trial with League Two side Walsall. Now, it has been confirmed that he has joined the club on a permanent basis.

Former Blackburn Rovers, Reading and Newcastle United midfielder Danny Guthrie has completed a move to League Two side Walsall, coming in ahead of the new season and becoming Darrell Clarke’s tenth signing of the transfer window.

The Saddlers confirmed the arrival of Guthrie on Thursday, after he played for the club in a pre-season friendly against Leamington Spa, with the score finishing at 1-1.

Speaking to the club website upon the confirmation of the deal, Guthrie said:

“I’m delighted to be with the club,” said Guthrie.

“I have been here just over a week now training with the lads and I played on Tuesday night.

“They are a great set of lads and the coaching staff are great as well. There is a great energy in the group and hopefully, I can bring a bit of experience and composure. The gaffer is looking to bring a good mix of youth and experience into the squad so that we can give it a really good push this season.

“No team goes through a season without a sticky patch and that is why we need a few experienced lads who have been there and done it before. It’s all about getting the right mix in the squad. You need a bit of everything and hopefully, I can help with my experience.”

Former Liverpool youngster Guthrie had been out of the game for six months after his release from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2017, before making a move to Polish outfit Mitra Kukar. He spent a year with the Polish club before leaving in January 2019 and is now on the lookout for a contract.
