Middlesbrough goalkeeper ‘likely’ to join Middle-East side on free transfer

Recently released former-Middlesbrough goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos is ‘likely’ to join a side in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, according to the player.

In an interview with The Northern Echo, Konstantopoulos said that ‘one year in Dubai is looking likely at this stage’, and that he would welcome ‘a new challenge’.

League One side Sunderland were interested in the 40-year old, who left Middlesbrough by mutual consent at the end of last month after not renewing his contract. However, it looks as though the North-East rivals of Boro will be missing out on this deal.

Blackburn Rovers were also reportedly interested, with boss Tony Mowbray having signed Konstantopoulos for the Teessiders during his time in charge in 2013.

With the one-cap Greece international currently 40-years of age, there was talk that he would hang up his boots following his release from Middlesbrough, but he says this was not an option.

“I haven’t thought of retiring this summer, but my plan is that I want to coach after I retire. I have not set a date for when that is. I have done by B Licence and I’m now working towards my A.

“I have been open in general to things since realising I would not be staying at Middlesbrough. Agents ring you, ask you stuff, ask if you are interested in this and that, and Dubai came up.”

It is believed Konstantopoulos has discussed the move to Dubai with former teammate Alvaro Negredo, who currently plies his trade for Al-Nasr in the UAE, however the club is remaining unnamed whilst a deal is being struck up.
