Leeds United striker’s Barnsley move – Hull City gazumped?

In news just announced on the club website, Barnsley have won the race to capture Mallik Wilks from Leeds United. That capture by the Reds will be a punch in the guts for Hull City who had already agreed a £1.2million fee for Wilks with the Whites.

Wilks signing what is a four-year deal with the Tykes means that he becomes the South Yorkshire side’s ninth signing of the summer window as they look at strengthen ahead of their return to the Sky Bet Championship and the second tier of English football.

In his six years at Elland Road, local lad Wilks impressed in his move up the youth set-ups at the Whites. However, he didn’t break through into the first team set-up, his only game coming in the abject 1-0 loss to non-league Sutton United in the FA Cup.

Barnsley say they “have beaten many other competitors” to capture the signature of a player they call “one of the most highly rated young players in the Sky Bet Championship.” In doing so, they are bringing in a talented youngster who scored 16 goals and added 12 assists in the 55 games that he played whilst on loan to League One side Doncaster Rovers last season.

Whilst fans will no doubt be celebrating at Oakwell, the same cannot be said in East Yorkshire where Tigers fans might have been convinved that a £1.2million agreed fee might have been enough to seal the deal. Yet, in the cold light of day it wasn’t.

One can’t help but feel that Hull City have been gazumped by Barnsley’s capture of Wilks. The aforementioned and linked article from the Hull Daily Mail mentions a bg fee, have barnsley gone above that to land their man? All that Leeds United have said in the news on their website is that Wilks has left the club for the usual, and ubiquitous, “undisclosed fee.”

Undisclosed or not, Wilks joining Barnsley means that the Tigers are left pawing at the dirt in their search for more attacking threat.
