U’s sign Brighton youngster

Colchester United have continued a busy week in the transfer market by completing the signing of defender Matthew Weaire.

Signing from Brighton & Hove Albion, the central defender has made the move to Essex, as confirmed on the official club website.

He will initially link up with the academy squad but will be keen to make an impression for his new side.

His arrival comes after the signing of fellow centre-back Danny Collinge from German club VfB Stuttgart, where the 21-year-old spent a five-year spell playing for their reserve side.

Weaire has signed a two-year deal after the expiry of his scholarship contract at the Amex Stadium.

The 17-year-old played 21 games in the U18 Premier League for the Seagulls and also spent time on loan at non-league Gosport Borough.

After starting life at Chelsea, he has spent six years at Brighton, appearing regularly for their under-18 and under-23 sides.

He has also earned international honours, playing for the Danish under-19’s when he was just 16, qualifying for Denmark through his mother.

Joining him in departing the south-coast club was French midfielder Julien Carre, who has signed a two-year deal with Championship club Brentford.

Speaking to the Brighton website, Albion under-18 manager Mark Beard expressed his best wishes to the departing pair.

Albion joint under-18 coach Mark Beard told the Brighton club website: “These are two excellent moves for Julien and Matthew, in what is an exciting next stage in both of their careers.

“They have worked incredibly hard during their time with us, and fully deserve these opportunities at EFL clubs.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to wish Julien and Matthew all the very best for the future.”
