We reported here on The72 on Monday that playmaker Jonny Williams had joined up with Charlton Athletic on their pre-season training camp in Spain ahead of the 2019/20 Championship season.

Jonny Williams is currently without a club heading into the new season, with his contract at Premier League side Crystal Palace coming to an end upon the climax of the season.

A number of clubs from the Championship have been credited with interest in the Welsh playmaker, with Charlton Athletic – who Williams spent the second half of last season with – one of the clubs monitoring the midfielder’s situation.

Addicks boss Lee Bowyer has made no secret that the club are interested in bringing him back this summer but has acknowledged that they will not be the only ones looking at the possibility of signing Williams on a bargain deal.

Now, speaking to the club website, Bowyer explained the thinking behind bringing Williams with them to Spain, reiterating once again that they will continue to monitor his situation.

“I just thought it was a good idea that Jonny came along with us. He obviously hasn’t got a club at the moment, so it suits us and it suits him. Like I said before things weren’t dead and buried with Jonny.

“We’re just waiting to see what options he has but obviously, we’re interested in him. So, it’s good for him to come with us and get the pre-season that we’re doing so that if we do sign him he’s going to be up to speed with the rest of the lads. So it’s good for us and it’s good for Jonny.

Even if he goes onto another club then at least he knows that he’s had good training and he’s ready for whatever he chooses to do.”
