Blackburn Rovers snap up Everton stopper

Blackburn Rovers have announced their second summer signing after Stewart Downing, as Joe Hilton joins the club from Everton on a two-year deal, according to Rovers’ official website.

Hilton joined the Merseyside club back in 2016, having left Manchester City. His contract expired this summer and Blackburn have sought to add him to their under-23 ranks.

The highly-rated Englishman, formerly of Manchester City, even made his under-18 debut aged just 15, and the Rovers website describes him as a ‘towering presence between the posts’.

The 19 year-old competed with Joao Virginia at Goodison Park, as Everton dominated youth level football winning both the Premier League 2 Division 1 and Premier League Cup titles.

Last season he kept two clean sheets in six games for David Unsworth’s under-23 side at Finch Farm, as well as featuring against Barnsley’s first team in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Hilton has trained with England number one, Jordan Pickford and 2010 World Cup runner-up, Maarten Stekelenburg as well as with Virginia and Mateusz Hewelt.

The youngster already has valuable first-team experience under his belt, having joined Marine during the second-half of the 2018/19 season, making 18 appearances and keeping six clean sheets.

He will compete with fellow young stopper, Andrew Fisher for the starting berth in the under-23 side for the upcoming season as well as pushing David Raya and Jayson Leutweiler in the first-team.

The signing of Jonas Lossl from relegated Huddersfield only further hampered any chances of Hilton being in and around the first-team, and so Everton opted not to renew his deal.

Blackburn start their 2019/20 season off with a home game against newly-promoted, Charlton Athletic.
