Cardiff City want to bolster defence by signing Hearts defender

Cardiff City are interested in Hearts defender John Souttar.

The Bluebirds have joined Rangers in pursuit of the 22-year-old, as per a report by Football Insider.

Neil Warnock’s side are preparing for a Championship promotion push next season following their relegation from the Premier League.

Souttar is a Scotland international with three caps to his name so far in his career. He had previously represented his country at U17, U19 and U21 level. His younger brother, Harry, plays for Championship side Stoke City.

The Aberdeen-born defender started out at Brechin City Youths before switching for Dundee United in 2006. He made his first-team debut for in January 2013 in a Scottish Premiership fixture against Aberdeen.

Souttar played alongside the likes of Andy Robertson and Ryan Gauld at Tannadice and made 73 appearances for them altogether, chipping in with two goals along the way.

He then made the switch to Hearts in January 2016 and has since played over 100 games for Craig Levein’s side.

It is a big season ahead for Cardiff in the Championship and Souttar would be a decent coup by them. The Bluebirds have also been heavily linked with a move for Rotherham United midfielder Will Vaulks.

They have a strong core of players following their campaign in the top flight with some top second tier players in it so they will be aiming for an immediate return to the Premier League next season.
