Leeds United’s last-minute interest not enough to tempt Championship-bound star to Elland Road

The Bristol Post has reported that Leeds United’s late interest in Colchester United playmaker Sammie Szmodics was not enough, with the 24-year-old set to make a move to fellow Championship side Bristol City.

It has been widely reported over the course of the past few weeks that Colchester United playmaker Sammie Szmodics has been attracting significant transfer interest from a number of Championship and League One clubs, after another strong season with the League Two side.

Championship sides Bristol City, Derby County and Hull City were all credited with interest in Szmodics, but it seemed that they were set to miss out on a deal when League One outfit Peterborough United agreed a fee with Colchester. However, Posh’s accepted bid prompted Championship action, with Bristol City moving in to bring him in.

However, it has now been claimed that Leeds United lodged interest in Szmodics last one, but they have ultimately missed out and it is expected that he will make a move to the Robins imminently. £750,000 is believed to be the fee paid for the Colchester United man, who will test himself in the Championship for the first time in his career.

Since making his professional debut for The U’s in September 2013, Szmodics has gone on to play 165 games for the club, netting 38 goals and providing 16 assists for the club (Transfermarkt). He comes with bags full of football league experience, playing 99 games in League Two and 43 in League One. Last season  he enjoyed a successful campaign, scored 14 goals and providing nine assist in 41 League Two games.
