It has been widely reported over the course of the few months that Championship side Leeds United are interested in Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Iturraspe, with his contract with the Basque club expiring this summer.
And now, it has been reported by El Desmarque that Iturraspe will be leaving Athletic Bilbao this summer, making him a free agent. Bilbao have opted not to renew his deal with the club, leaving him free to search for a new club ahead of the 2019/20 season.
Leeds United are among the sides who could look to pounce for the experienced Spanish midfielder, having been linked with a move for the Spaniard over the past few months.
Iturraspe is keen to keep playing at a high level and has reportedly attracted interest from a number of countries. Clubs from “exotic leagues” in Asia and Greece have been lodged for the 31-year-old, but El Desmarque writes that Iturraspe is open to playing in either Spain or England after spending his entire career in Spain.
Iturraspe’s links with Marcelo Bielsa could stand the Whites in good stead if they opt to make a move for him this summer. The midfielder played under Bielsa during his time at Bilbao and he would not look badly upon a possible reunion with the Argentine this summer.
Apart from one season with Basque side Basconia, Iturraspe has spent his entire senior career playing for Athletic Bilbao. He joined the club in 2008, making his La Liga debut for the club at the age of 19. Since then, he has gone on to play a massive 320 games for the club, picking up three goals and seven assists along the way.
It will be interesting to see if Leeds do make a move for Iturraspe now that his departure has been confirmed, or if the links remain as just speculation.
