Everton join Aston Villa and Newcastle United in race for Bristol City defender

Everton have joined the race to sign Bristol City defender Adam Webster.

The Robins will face a real battle to hold onto the 24-year-old this summer, as per a report by Bristol Live.

Marco Silva’s side are keen to bring in another centre-back over the coming weeks with Phil Jagielka leaving and Kurt Zouma returning to his parent club Chelsea. The Toffees will set their sights on Webster now but he won’t come cheap.

The Merseyside club could delve into the Championship for talent this summer having also been credited with an interest in Hull City winger Jarrod Bowen recently.

Aston Villa have been linked with Webster as well as they look to bolster their defensive options ahead of their return to the Premier League. Newcastle United have also been mentioned.

He joined Bristol City last summer from Ipswich Town for a fee of around £3.5 million and impressed for Lee Johnson’s side last season. He made 47 appearances in all competitions in the last campaign, chipping in with three goals.

Webster, who is 6ft 3inc, started his career at Portsmouth and rose up through the youth ranks at Fratton Park. He made his first-team debut for Pompey at the age of 17 in a Championship fixture against West Ham United in 2011.

He went onto play 81 times for Portsmouth in all three divisions in the Football League, as well as enjoying a loan spell at Aldershot Town in 2014.

Webster was snapped up by Ipswich in July 2016 for an undisclosed fee and played 53 times altogether for the Tractor Boys before leaving for Bristol City
