Leeds United offered transfer boost as manager admits reported target could depart

Speaking to Bristol Live, Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has said that winger Callum O’Dowda could be sold by the club this summer if he does not put pen to paper on a new deal at Ashton Gate.

During the January transfer window, Leeds United were heavily linked with a move for winger Callum 0’Dowda, who plays his football for fellow Championship side Bristol City. However, after an extension in O’Dowda’s deal was triggered, the Whites’ pursuit seemingly came to an end.

However, we reported here on The72 last month that Callum O’Dowda could be looking to make a move away from Bristol City this summer, with Leeds United interested. And, it was also claimed that the Republic of Ireland winger could look to make a move to Leeds United this summer, with his contract expiring next summer.

Now, Robins boss Lee Johnson has said that if O’Dowda does not agree to sign a new contract this summer, they will be looking to move him on rather than risk losing him on the cheap. Johnson revealed:

“I don’t know is the honest answer (if he will stay). I’ve said before that the door is always open – there is no issue with Callum on a personal and a professional level.

“He’s a player that I want to do well. We have to do the right thing. And if the player’s not going to sign a new contract then we’ve got to move him on.”

The 24-year-old played 35 games for Lee Johnson’s side last season, scoring five goals and providing five assists along the way as well. He hasn’t featured since a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town in March, with a knee injury keeping him out of action.

Now, if he does not sign a new deal with the Robins, he may have played his last game for the club. It will be interesting to see how O’Dowda’s situation develops as the transfer window progresses.
