Journalist confirms news most Leeds United fans knew re target ‘interest’

Last night one of the rumours of the summer burst across social media. That rumour? Well, that Leeds United were one of a trio of clubs interested in free agent legend Gianluigi Buffon.

The second-tier Whites were said in competition against Brazilian side Fluminense and Portuguese giants Porto both of whom play in their respective country’s top flights.

Of all the transfer rumours so far, and there have been many, it was this one that stretched the imagination the furthest. After all, Buffon is still a legend of the game of football and played a big part in Paris Saint-Germain’s successful Ligue 1 campaign.

Quite simply put, Gigi is one of the greatest keepers to have played the game. Way back in 2001 he commanded a £47.6m fee moving from Parma to Juventus, staying at the Turin giants for the next 17 seasons. He’s a veterna of 640 Serie A games and has an astonishing 176 Italy caps to his name. In total he has 901 appearances to his name and has kept an astonishing 405 clean sheets.

It created quite a buzz amongst Leeds United fans across Twitter last night, a buzz of mixed feelings to be quite honest. It was still being talked about this morning, and through this afternoon. Maybe that talk will quieten down after this tweet from the Mirror’s David Anderson.

All that Anderson does is tell Leeds United fans what, deep down, they already knew in that the club are not interested in bringing Gigi to Elland Road. It is one thing convincing a third-choice Real Madrid stopper like Kiko Casilla to swap the cosmopolitan nature of Madrid for the more honest industrial nature of Leeds. It is another trying the same sell with a great like Buffon.

That dream finally put to bed, it means that Leeds United fans can get back to wondering just who the Whites are brining in this summer to spearhead what they hope will be a promotion charge after falling so agonisingly short last season. There are many names out there, but none so famous as the former Juventus and Italy stalwart Gianluigi Buffon, that’s for sure.
