Leeds United interested in Gianluigi Buffon

Leeds United are looking to strengthen their side after failing to get promoted in Marcelo Bielsa’s first season.

The decision by Marcelo Bielsa to stay put in West Yorkshire was always going to be a big one which helped the club entice players, with the likes of Helder Costa and Ryan Kent among those being linked with moves to the Whites in recent weeks.

However, the club are today being linked with a shock move for Italian international and footballing legend Gianluigi Buffon.

According to Italian newspaper Corriere, Leeds are mentioned as one of a number of clubs thought to be interested in signing the experienced stopper, who at 41 is coming right up towards the end of his illustrious career.

Buffon is 41 years of age and a move to Elland Road would be hugely surprising. Even if it’s true that Leeds are keen, it takes a great leap to believe the Juventus legend, known to be fiercely proud, would accept a season in the Championship to round off his career.

He is said to be receiving interest from Brazilian side Fluminense and Portuguese giants Porto.

Buffon spent just one season in Paris after 17 years at Juve and announced his departure earlier this month.

‘Ernest Hemingway wrote that there are only two places in the world where people can live happily: at home and in Paris,’ he said.

‘Today onwards, this will also apply to me: Paris, in some way, will always remain my home.

‘Twelve months ago, I arrived at Paris Saint-Germain filled with enthusiasm, welcomed by the incredible warmth of the fans. It was really moving. Thank you, once again, from the bottom of my heart.’
