Leeds United and Middlesbrough target “not sure” about Championship move

A report from Belgian news outlet DH has claimed that reported Leeds United and Middlesbrough transfer target Michael Frey is “not sure” about making a move to the Championship this summer.

It has been reported over the past few weeks that Championship pair Leeds United and Middlesbrough are both interested in Fenerbahce striker Michael Frey, who looks set for the exit door at the Turkish Super Lig club.

However, the reported target may have dented the hopes of the Championship pair, with it being claimed by Belgian reports that he is “not sure” about making a move to the English second division. It has also been reported by DH that Belgian Jupiler Pro League duo Genk and Anderlecht are also eyeing up a move for the Swiss striker, who endured a difficult season with Fenerbahce.

Frey only managed to score five goals in 25 games across all competitions last season, playing just 14 games in the Turkish Super Lig. The 24-year-old struggled to find form and nail down a place in the club’s starting eleven owing to consistent injury problems, including a groin injury and torn ligaments.

Despite his difficult first season with Fenerbahce, Frey managed to score two goals and provide one assist in five Europa League group games and has previously shown he can be a dangerous striker. During his only season with FC Zurich, Frey netted 16 goals and laid on six assists in 39 games, also enjoying two successful spells with BSC Young Boys.

The Swiss striker scored 24 goals and provided 14 assists in his first stint with Young Boys after coming through the club’s youth academy, scoring 13 goals after his return to the club in the 2016/17 season.
