Portsmouth on the verge of signing striker from League One rivals

Ipswich Town striker Ellis Harrison is close to joining fellow League One side Portsmouth, according to the East Anglian Daily Times.

Portsmouth were reportedly interested in the striker before he signed for Ipswich from Bristol Rovers last summer for a fee of £750,000, whilst they renewed their interest in January.

The 25-year-old attacker struggled in front of goal in an injury hit campaign last time out, getting just one goal and one assist in 16 Championship appearances for Ipswich, who were relegated after finishing bottom of the league.

According to rumours online Harrison was spotted at Portsmouth’s training ground today as the deal edges closer, although it is not clear at this stage how much he will cost Pompey.

Ipswich are also set to lose goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski, who is one his way to Championship side Millwall.

They have already signed James Norwood from Tranmere but with Freddie Sears set to be out until November at the earliest, they will most likely be looking to bring in another striker to replace Harrison.

The striker started his career at Bristol Rovers in 2011, where he stayed until signing for Ipswich in 2018, he played nearly 200 games for Rovers, scoring 44 goals and has made 16 appearances for the Wales under-21 team, netting three times.

As much as it may be a risk for Ipswich to sell the striker to a League One rival, Paul Lambert will be looking to continue to bring in some more of his own player this summer, whilst Harrison did struggle in the Championship last season.

It will be interesting to see how the 25-year-old fares at Fratton Park if the deal goes ahead, as Pompey will be looking to improve on last season’s play-off semi final defeat and achieve promotion to the Championship in the 2019/20 campaign.
