Portsmouth in talks over move for Sheffield United striker

A report from Football Insider has claimed that League One side Portsmouth are in talks with Sheffield United over a move for striker Ched Evans.

Portsmouth are in the market for a new striker this summer, and Kenny Jackett has identified Sheffield United striker Ched Evans as a potential option, opening talks over a deal for the 30-year-old. Matty Godden is also reportedly on the radar of Pompey, but they have had their approaches knocked back by Peterborough United.

Evans has a year remaining on his contract at Bramall Lane but after the Blades won promotion to the Premier League, it is highly unlikely that Evans will be given guaranteed game time with the newly promoted club. Portsmouth are hoping that this will allow them to bring the striker in on the cheap this summer as Kenny Jackett looks to prepare his squad for another promotion push.

Pompey are not the only club keen on Evans this summer. The report claims that Oxford United are among a number of clubs pursuing a permanent deal for the former Manchester City youngster.

Evans enjoyed a thoroughly successful spell on loan with League One side Fleetwood Town last season, scoring 18 goals and providing four assists in 41 games across all competitions for Joey Barton’s side. It was reported back in April that Fleetwood were keen to bring back their loan hero next season, but with competition for the striker increasing, Cod Army manager Joey Barton may not be able to bring him back.
