League One club Accrington Stanley have confirmed that they will host French club Marseille in a pre-season friendly on Thursday 11th July.

Stanley owner Andy Holt has masterminded the agreement for the Ligue 1 club to take part in the friendly as part of their preparation for the forthcoming season.

The former Champions League winners finished fifth in the French top tier last season and also played in the Europa League.

Unfortunately for Stanley, due to the ongoing work being done to their pitch at the Wham Stadium, the game is to be held at the AJ Bell Stadium in Salford.

Andy Holt has been in contact with Marseille since finding out that they were coming over to England to train at St George’s Park and secured the fixture.

He said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity, they are a massive club, playing PSG regularly, and now they are facing the mighty Stanley.

“The only downside is that, having the pitch done, means it’s not at home, it would have been fantastic to have the game at the Wham Stadium, but this is the next best thing.

“It’s a great friendly, they have players like Mario Balotelli and Dimitri Payet playing for them. It should be good fun and I can’t wait. It’s another step in the right direction for Accrington Stanley.”

This is a rare opportunity for Accrington Stanley and one the players will certainly be looking forward to, whilst manager John Coleman will be hoping it helps his side prepare for the 2019/20 campaign, as they look to improve on last season’s 14th place finish.
