Lee Bowyer set for showdown talks with out of contract midfielder

Lee Bowyer will hold showdown talks with midfielder Joe Aribo. It is thought that Bowyer will try and convince him to continue his career at The Valley.

Aribo is set to sign for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers after interest from both Glasgow sides this summer. His contract with Charlton ends this summer but Bowyer is keen to keep the man who played a massive part in Charlton’s run to the play-offs and promotion to the Championship.

According to the London Evening Standard, on Friday the two parties will meet to discuss the future after Charlton confirmed on Tuesday that Bowyer had agreed a contract extension for the 2019/20 season.

It is thought that last summer Aribo was offered a new contract and had agreed a deal with the club but controversial owner Roland Duchatelet then decided to withdraw the offer meaning Aribo would enter the final twelve months of his contract. This has allowed other clubs to open talks with him and Rangers look to have secured his signature ahead of other Championship clubs and Glasgow rivals Celtic.

Due to the fact Aribo is only 22, Charlton will receive compensation but that is likely be around the £250,000 mark. The loss will come as another blow to the fans and to Lee Bowyer as he will become the second player to leave the club this week. It was confirmed on Wednesday morning that Patrick Bauer had joined Preston on a three year contract after his deal with Charlton also came to an end.

Bauer scored the winner at Wembley against Sunderland in added time as Charlton secured promotion back to the Championship but that proved to be his final goal in a Charlton shirt.
