Preston win the race for Charlton defender

Preston North End have confirmed their first signing of the summer with the arrival of Patrick Bauer from Charlton Athletic.

North End have seen off interest from Blackburn Rovers, whilst The Addicks offered the centre half a new deal at the club, which he turned down.

Speaking about the new challenge ahead, he said: “I was four years at Charlton, we had some disappointing moments, but also highs, like the promotion this season. I spent a good time there, but it was time for me to start a new chapter in my career and I am really excited to be here now.”

Preston manager Alex Neil has been speaking about how he wants experienced players as he focuses on quality over quantity in this summer window.

He said: “Patrick is a strong and powerful defender who we have monitored closely. He has experience of playing at the top level in Portugal and adapted very well to English football in the past few years and he will add more competition to our defence in the central positions.”

The 26-year-old defender began his career at Stuttgart before moving to Maritimo in Portugal where he played nearly 50 games.

In 2015, he moved to Charlton, where he has gone on to play over 100 games for the club, scoring the winner in last season’s play-off final against Sunderland.

Despite the centre back pairing of Ben Davies and Jordan Storey doing so well for the Lilywhites last season, they are both fairly inexperienced, as Bauer looks to add that mix of quality and experience to his side that Alex Neil was looking for.
