Sheffield Wednesday considering move for Wigan Athletic star defender

Wigan Athletic defender Chey Dunkley is attracting interest from fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, news outlet Football League World has reported.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce is keen to bring some new faces to Hillsborough next season as he looks to build on last season’s 12th place finish. And it has been reported that Wigan Athletic defender Chey Dunkley is one player on his radar this summer.

The club are currently under a soft transfer embargo, but they are hoping that it will be lifted by the EFL to allow them to sign some new players in good time before the start of the new season.

The Owls are in the market for a new centre-back this summer after loan defender Michael Hector returned to parent club Chelsea upon the end of his loan spell with the club. It has been said that the club will be looking to bring Hector back this summer, but the links with Dunkley hint that they are looking at other options as well.

Dunkley played an important role in Paul Cook’s Wigan Athletic side over the course of the 2018/19 Championship season, playing in 39 games across all competitions. Since joining the Latics from Oxford United back in the summer of 2017, Dunkley has played 89 times, helping the club maintain their Championship status in his two seasons with the club.

The 27-year-old has amassed plenty of Football League experience over the course of his career. He has played in the National League, League Two, League One and the Championship for Kidderminster Harriers, Oxford and Wigan.
