Leeds United fans react after “top target” follows club

At this time of the off-season, anything that raises the pulse beyond its normal range for football fans is welcomed. Anything that drags the interest level up beyond the mundanity of Player X linked with the club is welcomed.

So when a player identified as a ‘target’ for a club follows said club on social media, you have to forgive the ripples of excitement. That is what is happening at the moment with Leeds United fans as they begin to react to news that big target Helder Costa has followed the Whites official Instagram account (below).

Helder Costa was first put forward as a “top target” by former Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Phil Hay in news that certainly set more than a few Leeds United fans’ tongues wagging. After all, the Luanda-born Portuguese winger is a bona fide flyer who would more than upgrade the right flank of Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United outfit.

He cost Wolves a then club record £13.5m when signing on permanently at Molineux at the end of January 2017. Last season, in Wolves return to the top tier of English football, Costa played in 25 games, scoring once and adding two assists for the Black Country club.

However, he caught the eye in his first season at Wolves when on loan from Benfica between July 2016 and his eventual half-season as a permanent player. In total he played 35 games and scored 1 goals, adding a further eight assists. The following season in the English Championship he scored five more goals and added six assists across a furhter 36 games.

The fact that he has just followed Leeds United on Instagram, as evidenced above, is enough to get some of Leeds United’s social media-hungry fanbase more than excited that a signing is imminent. Here’s how some fans are reacting.

Should this prove to be the first step of a coming together between Leeds United and Helder Costa then the comments here will be small fry compared to if the Whites announce his capture on a loan deal for the season. That happens, then Twitter had better get a few more servers dusted off and readied for the surge in traffic.
