Aston Villa could be set for transfer battle with two big hitters for Premier League left-back

TEAMtalk has claimed that Premier League sides Liverpool and Arsenal have both enquired about the availability of Southampton left-back Matt Targett, who has been linked with a move to newly promoted Aston Villa.

We reported earlier this month that Dean Smith’s Aston Villa were interested in Southampton left-back Matt Targett, with newly relegated Fulham also credited with interest in the English defender. Now, however, they could be in for a fight for his signature, with Liverpool and Arsenal seemingly interested.

Champions League winners Liverpool and Europa League runners-up Arsenal have both made enquiries about the 23-year-old, TEAMtalk claims. Newcastle United and Leicester City – who were interested in Targett last summer – have once again been credited with interest in the left-back as well.

Dean Smith is keen to bring in some competition for Neil Taylor at left-back after their promotion to the Premier League, and he has identified Targett as a potential option, The former England youth international would cost around £10 million to buy, but with interest seemingly growing, Ralph Hassenhutl’s Southampton could up the asking price in hopes of a bidding war.

Targett has amassed a decent amount of Premier League experience with the Saints. He has played 43 games in the top flight for Southampton in total, also enjoying a successful loan spell with Fulham, who he helped win promotion to the Premier League last summer, defeating Villa in the play-off final.

Ryan Bertrand is the first choice left-back at Southampton, so Targett could look to make a move away this summer in search of some more first-team minutes.
