Frank Lampard’s uncle Harry Redknapp has claimed that a return to former club Chelsea is on the brink of happening according to the Daily Mail.
The Blues parted company with Maurizio Sarri on Sunday and are now said to be stepping up their interest in the former Chelsea player.
Redknapp now believes his nephew is in line to take over at Stamford Bridge as a sensational return appears to be edging closer.
“I think it will be a major surprise if he does not get the job. It looks to me as though it will happen,” he told Talksport.
“It’s brilliant for him. A shame for Derby. He has gone up there and done a good job.
I’m sure Derby they loved having him there, the fans and everybody so it will be a shame for them, the club, the fans, but for Chelsea it is a great move for them.”
“He is idolised at Chelsea. He is a genuine legend there. He knows the game, he knows what it’s about, he has a touch of class and I think he will be great.”
Lampard undoubtedly did a fantastic job at Pride Park last season and is adored by the Derby faithful but his strong connections with Chelsea will surely make it impossible for him to turn down any approach from the club in which he spent 13 years as a player and scored 147 goals in 429 appearances and is rightfully renowned as a club legend.
Derby had entered contract talks with Lampard as they look to keep hold of their manager and will demand £4million in compensation from the Premier League club should they come calling.
Some think it may be too soon for Lampard at such a high profile club at this early stage of his management career and only time will tell if this is the right move should the appointment be made.
