Cardiff City agree deal to sign League One defender amid interest from Sunderland

According to a report from the Daily Mail, newly relegated Cardiff City have agreed a deal to sign defender Curtis Nelson from League One side Oxford United, beating off interest from Sunderland to the centre-back’s signature.

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock will be looking to bring in some fresh faces ahead of their return to the Championship for the 2019/20 season, and it seems that they have completed their first signing of the summer.

Oxford United defender Curtis Nelson is set to join the club on a free transfer after his contract at the Kassam Stadium expired at the end of the season. League One side Sunderland were reportedly interested as well, but it is the Bluebirds who appear to have won the race for the 26-year-old.

The departure won’t come as much of a surprise for Oxford fans after manager Karl Robinson said that he did not expect Nelson to be with the club beyond the summer after speaking with the defender upon the end of the season.

“I’ll be honest, I don’t foresee Curtis being with us next season. I think that’s quite obvious,” Robinson said to the Oxford Mail.

“I spoke to him about four weeks ago. I presume he’s got something lined up, but we don’t know where.

“I want to thank Curtis for everything he’s done. He gave us everything, at the back end of the season he was arguably one of our better players. I know when I first came in there were question marks over certain things.

“But every question mark I had over Curtis Nelson he certainly answered. There’s no arguments, we will always be there for him.

“Maybe we’ll cross paths again and he goes with our best wishes.”

Nelson has amassed plenty of Football League experience over the course of his career. He made his breakthrough into senior football with Plymouth Argyle, where he played 245 games for the Pilgrims. He joined Oxford United in 2016.

After three years and 121 games for Oxford, he looks set to test himself in the Championship as Cardiff look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
