Sheffield Wednesday hijack Celtic transfer deal for £3m midfielder

Accrding to reports in the Scottish Sun, Sheffield Wednesday are readying themselves to hijack Celtic’s bid for Motherwell’s exciting teen midfiielder David Turnbull. They are also willing to pay big to get the 19-year-old Wishaw-born midfielder – willing as they are to meet the Well’s £3m asking price.

The Scottish Sun’s article, written by Andy Devlin, says that Celtic themselves had a £3m bid accepted and were hoping to confirm the youngster as a Hoops player on Friday. However, that date passed without a deal being signed off, with Devlin’s article saying the two parties had failed “to agree personal terms” and that this meant “the entire deal is on the brink of collapse.

The failure of Celtic to secure a deal meant that other sides in England, with Bristol City and Southampton specifically mentioned, were interested and put “back on red alert.” Devlin then points out Sheffield Wednesday and says that the Owls “are now ready to swoop.

The two-cap Scotland Under-21 international definitely had a season that caught the eye. After a 25-game Premiership particpation, Turnbull had an impressive nine goals and five assists to his name. He was also prolific in Motherwell’s SPL ‘relegation’ round scoring SIX goals in five games and adding an assist to boot.

Devlin’s article goes on to place the blame for the deal falling down firmly at the feet of the player and his advisors, saying that “sources close to to the deal claim Turnbull’s representatives are asking for close to £20,000 a week.” That figure, says the Scottish Sun, would place the Motherwell youngster on more that some of Celtic’s treble Treble winners.

Celtic are unwilling to break their rigid wage structure and that could very well be the foot in the door that Sheffield Wednesday want as they look to hijack the Bhoys deal for the goalscoring 19-year-old Turnbull.
