Portsmouth trump Scottish giant Rangers bid for League One star

According to a report in the Daily Record, League One side Portsmouth have jumped into the driving seat in the race to capture Oldham Athletic’s young defender George Edmundson.

Edmundson is being courted by both Rangers and Portsmouth after an impressive season following his arrival from non-league Fylde in early January 2018. His first half-season at the League Two club saw him feature 15 times for the Lancashire side, scoring his first goal for the club against Northampton Town on the last day of the season.

However, it was this season where Edmundson really caught the eye, featuring in 45 games for Oldham and only missing an ever-present season due to receiving nine yellow cards. His level of consistency, aided by his two goals and four assists, has marked him out to be a player of interest.

That interest is currently led, say the Daily Record, by Portsmouth who have has an offer of £600,000 plus add-on accepted for the 21-year-old centreback. This bid has been accepted by the Latics, and is £100,000 more than Rangers have offered for his signature.

The closeness of Rangers bid could tempt the Scottish giant into upping their offer should they be determined to land the youngster. The Daily Record report that Rangers are “still in the fight” to land Edmundson and “know the player is keen on an Ibrox move.”

Edmundson has only just returned from holiday and is said sitting down wiht family and advisors as he plots what move to make next in a fledgling football ccareer that is threatening to take off.
