Aston Villa plot swoop for £10million rated Premier League defender

Aston Villa are plotting a swoop for £10million rated defender Matt Targett according to The Sun.

The Southampton left-back is one of the main transfers which Aston Villa boss Dean Smith hopes to complete to provide competition at full back following their return to the Premier League.

Targett almost made the move to Fulham in the January transfer window however that move fell through but he has left the door open for a move to the top flight new boys.

The 23-year-old is a more than capable defender however he has often found himself as second choice at the Saints behind Ryan Bertrand although he did make 16 Premier League appearances last season.

As well as having decent top level experience he has also been capped at youth level for England so he comes with added international experience as well.

He spent the second-half of the 2017/18 season on loan at Fulham where he impressed and Villa will now target the full back.

Targett also provides good attacking play with a goal and three assists from the left. He also offers versatility and can play in a more advanced position in midfield.

He would undoubtedly be a good signing for Aston Villa and with Neil Taylor already the established left back at the club this would only add quality competition for the position.

If Villa are to have a successful season and retain their Premier League status they will need to add experience to the side and Targett could provide just that.
