Walsall linked with former Newcastle United defender

Walsall have been linked with former Newcastle United defender Stefan O’Connor according to the Express and Star.

The 22-year-old has formerly had spells with both Newcastle and Arsenal and is now looking to begin a new chapter in his career.

He has enjoyed youth spells with the Gunners and Crystal Palace but he is now on a lengthy list of Newcastle players who are set to be on the transfer list this summer.

Born in Croydon, O’Connor has also been on loan at York City in his bid to secure first team football but unfortunately his career hasn’t progressed as he would have liked thus far.

He left Arsenal in 2017 to join Newcastle where he played for the Under-23’s and link up with Rafa Benitez but he hasn’t made a single first team appearance for the Magpies.

He is now being released as the Toon look to refresh their squad list ahead of the 2019/20 season.

Walsall have already made the signing of James Clarke from Bristol Rovers following their relegation to League Two after their hugely disappointing season saw them land in the fourth tier of English football.

Manager Darrell Clarke is looking to rebuild his squad ahead of what will be a crucial season for the Midlands side who will aim to return straight back to League One at the first time of asking.

However, a host of EFL clubs are also tracking the progress of O’Connor and Walsall will face a battle for his signature should they look to press ahead with their interest in him.
