Portsmouth considering move for Newcastle United midfielder

Portsmouth are considering a move for Newcastle United’s Dan Barlaser according to a report from the Portsmouth News.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who has been capped by both the England and Turkey youth sides, has never made a league appearance for Newcastle but has had two loan spells away from the club at Crewe Alexandra and Accrington Stanley. He is seen as a player with plenty of potential but with him not being close to breaking through into the Magpies first team, a loan move away from the club was always likely.

Two teams have already expressed an interest in Barlaser with both Preston North End and Wigan Athletic being interested in signing him. But now Portsmouth have joined the race to sign the youth international as they look to improve their team. They missed out on promotion this season after losing to Sunderland in the Sky Bet League One play-off semi-final and are looking to get the players necessary to make sure that heartbreak does not happen again.

With Barlaser coming off the back of an impressive season for Accrington, this would definitely be a good signing for Portsmouth. But at the moment, it does look like it will be difficult for them to pull it off. With two Sky Bet Championship sides also being interested in Barlaser, it would suggest that he is more likely to move to the higher division to test himself there. But perhaps the allure of playing at Fratton Park on a regular basis will persuade him to move south for the year.
