Southampton have £8m bid rejected for Birmingham City star

Southampton have had an £8m bid for Birmingham City striker Che Adams rejected, according to the Mail Online.

Adams is one of the most highly sought after players in the Championship and the report states that both Norwich City and Burnley are amongst a host of other clubs interested in signing the 22-year old this summer.

The Saints also saw a bid for the striker knocked back in January, but manager Ralph Hassenhutl is determined to land one of his main targets this time round as he looks to freshen up his forward line.

Southampton were the sixth lowest scorers in the Premier League last season and with Charlie Austin expected to leave the club this summer, a new striker is high up on Hassenhutl’s summer wish list.

Adams had an excellent season under Garry Monk last term, scoring 22 goals to help steer the Blues well clear of relegation after their nine point deduction.

He was also nominated for the Championship player of the season award, alongside promoted pair Teemu Pukki and Billy Sharp.

Adams took the long road into professional football, progressing through the ranks in Non-League with both Oadby Town and Ilkeston.

The Englishman got his first move into league football in 2014, when Sheffield United beat off competition to bring him to Bramall Lane.

During a spell of just under two years at the Blades, Adams scored 15 goals in 55 appearances before current club Birmingham City snapped him up in 2016 for around £2m.

He has since gone onto make 123 appearances for the Blues, scoring 38 goals; with the majority coming in the previous campaign.

As everyone knows the market for young English talent is inflated, but if Southampton are able to prize Adams to St Mary’s then it would represent good business.
