Frank Lampard keen to keep Derby County defender

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph, Derby County manager Frank Lampard has said that he is hoping that veteran left-back Ashley Cole will remain at the club beyond the end of the season.

Derby County manager Frank Lampard is keen for left-back Ashley Cole to extend his stay at Pride Park, with his contract with the cub set to expire soon.

Former Arsenal and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole only joined Derby in the January transfer window, putting pen to paper on a short-term deal to reunite with former teammate Frank Lampard. He came in to provide some much needed defensive cover, with Craig Forsyth injured and Max Lowe out on loan with Aberdeen.

And, with Cole’s contract set to expire, Lampard will have some decisions to make. He will have to decide whether or not he wants to keep academy graduate Max Lowe to bring him into the first-team or send him out on loan again, with Aberdeen keen.

Cole will also have to decide on his future, with the 38-year-old surely coming towards the end of his playing career.

“I would do,” Lampard said when asked if he would like to keep Cole beyond the end of this season.

“But that is absolutely his choice and whether he wants to carry on playing or not, is up to him.”

Despite his age, Cole has been a good signing for the Rams. He has come into the side and performed well for Lampard when needed. He played 12 times over the second half of the season, including all 120 minutes of Derby’s play-off final in the absence of Scott Malone.
