Highly sought after Charlton Athletic centre-back offered new deal

Newly promoted Charlton Athletic have confirmed on their club website that they have offered play-off hero Patrick Bauer a new contract at The Valley, with his current deal expiring soon.

Lee Bowyer revealed Charlton Athletic defender Patrick Bauer was set to the leave the club this summer if they failed to win promotion to the Championship, but after they defeated Sunderland in the play-off final courtesy of a late Bauer goal, Bowyer said that they would be offering him a new deal to try and tempt him into remaining at The Valley.

Now, the club have confirmed that they have offered the German a new deal, with his current deal set to expire soon.

It has been reported here on The72 that a number of Championship sides are interested in potentially bringing Bauer in on a free transfer. Blackburn Rovers have held a long-term interest in the centre-back, while fellow Championship sides, Hull City, Reading, Preston North End, Queens Park Rangers and Wigan Athletic have all also been credited with interest.

Speaking upon the announcement of the club’s retained and released list, Bowyer said:

“We’ve offered them a contract, they’ll either accept or decline, all we can do is offer contracts. The four of them [Patrick Bauer, Joe Aribo, Jake Forster-Caskey and Tariqe Fosu] are up, they’re the four we’ve chosen to offer contracts to.”

Bauer was star performer for Charlton Athletic over the course of the 2018/19 season, playing in 39 games across all competitions. He only scored one goal, but it came at the most important time for Bowyer’s side, sealing a place in the Championship in dramatic fashion.
