Swansea hold talks with former Oxford manager

Swansea City continue their hunt for Graham Potter’s successor.

The former Ostersunds boss left the Swans after just one successful season in Wales, after Premier League Brighton came in for him earlier this month.

That has left the Championship side in a difficult position as they also battle to keep hold of several key players who enjoyed impressive campaigns.

But, the first priority will be bringing in a new manager and BBC reporter Simon Stone revealedthat Appleton was holding talks with the club, although they don’t appear to be at an advanced stage.

Michael Appleton talking to #Swans about manager’s job today. Obviously not on his own as a candidate. Club keen (obviously) to get the right man.”

Appleton spent the final month of the season working under Baggies caretaker boss Jimmy Shan following the sacking of Darren Moore, but could now be eyeing a return to managing full time.

The 43-year-old’s last managerial job was with Oxford United, where he spent three years before taking on an assistant role at Leicester City, first under Craig Shakespeare and then Claude Puel.

His managerial CV also includes stints at Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and Portsmouth, having previously launched his coaching career at The Hawthorns by working with the club’s youth system, eventually becoming assistant to Roy Hodgson in 2009.

That experience of working with young players, as well as his knowledge of Championship football, may well have caught the eye of Swansea chiefs, who are also keen to ensure that the replacement for Graham Potter is capable of implementing the same form of free-flowing attacking football.

Opinion:

Michael Appleton reignited his stagnating managerial career with a successful sting in charge of Oxford. He revolutionised the club in his three year tenure as he got them promoted out of League One, playing some of the best football in the division whilst also reaching the final of the Football League Trophy.

In his first and only season at League One, Oxford again reached the final of the Football League Trophy whilst also impressively finishing eighth in the league.

He was credited with playing some brilliant football that is rarely ever seen in the lower divisions.

This is the type of football that Swansea City would like to implement and this is perhaps why the Swans are interested.

His record in the Championship is not the most successful but it has to be said that in all three of his tenure she was operating under abysmal ownership that surely made it difficult for him to do his job.

At Bloomfield Road he lasted 65 days and with Rovers he lasted a meagre 67 days. This suggests that he was never really given the time to put his own stamp and authority on the teams.

This would certainly be a decent appointment from the owner Trevor Birch and he seems more suited to the job than the favourites, Micky Mellon and Mark Robins.
