Cardiff City consider ex Tottenham Hotspur star

Lewis Holtby is leaving Hamburg this summer and will be a free agent.

According to The Daily Record, Rangers are interested in signing the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder in the summer transfer window.

However, Rangers manager Gerrard seems set to face competition from Cardiff City for the services of the former Schalke midfielder.

According to The Sun on Sunday (print edition, page 69, May 26, 2019), Cardiff manager Neil Warnock wants to sign Holtby on a free transfer.

It has been reported by the British tabloid that the midfielder would love to return to the UK with Cardiff, who will play in the Championship next season after getting relegated from the Premier League.

The Germany international struggled to make an impact at Tottenham, but the 28-year-old midfielder played well for Hamburg.

Holtby was the talk of European football a few years ago, with England courting him before he pledged his allegiance to Germany, where he was born.

His return to his homeland hasn’t gone to plan, with Hamburg relegated from the German top flight last season.

As a free agent Holtby would certainly fit the bill for Cardiff, who plan to bring in up to six player this summer in an attempt to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Opinion:

Cardiff City will certainly have a shake up this summer and they do need to bring in some players to challenge for promotion at the first time of asking.

Holtby didn’t set the world alight at Spurs and he perhaps was overhyped earlier in his career. In the second division in Germany, he only contributed to a meagre seven goals in 26 starts.

However, he was well liked in his spell at Craven Cottage in the 2013-14 season.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Holtby will be a world beater at Championship level but on a free transfer he represents a good bargain for Neil Warnocks side and should add flair to the team if they are able to secure him.

Bluebirds fans what do you think? Do you agree? Would it be a good buy?
