Cambridge United line up move for recently released Aston Villa striker

Cambridge United are interested in recently released Aston Villa striker Harvey Knibbs.

The League Two side are keen on bolstering their attacking options for next season by landing the youngster, as per a report by Cambridgeshire Live.

Knibbs’ contract at Villa Park is due to expire and he hasn’t been offered a new one by the recently promoted Premier League side.

Cambridge boss Colin Calderwood will know all about the 20-year-old striker from when he was the assistant manager of Aston Villa under Steve Bruce.

Knibbs scored three times for Villa’s Under-23’s last season. He never made a senior appearance for the Midlands side but has featured for them in pre-season friendlies in the past.

He was born in Derbyshire but joined the Villa academy as a youngster and rose up through the youth ranks there. He signed his first professional contract at the end of the 2016/17 season.

Knibbs now needs to find a new home and will most likely have to drop down the leagues and try and work his way back up. His links with Calderwood make Cambridge the obvious choice for him.

United finished 21st in League Two last season and will be hoping to do a lot better in the next campaign. They kick-started their summer recruitment yesterday by landing former Gateshead and Port Vale midfielder Luke Hannant on a free transfer.

Knibbs could be the next through the door at the Abbey Stadium and could be a key player for the U’s next season.
