Leeds United, Cardiff City and West Brom told they will have to pay over £2 million for transfer target

Cardiff City, West Bromwich Albion, Wigan Athletic and Leeds United  have been told they will have to cough up “significantly more” than £2 million if they want to sign Portsmouth winger Jamal Lowe.

Local media outlet The News report Pompey will take a firm stand on their valuation of the player who scored 17 goals in League One last season.

It had been thought the 22-year-old would be available for a cut-price fee as he only has one year remaining on his contract.

But it’s emerged Portsmouth have the option to activate a one-year extension to that deal and are under no pressure to sell him.

Sky Sports reported last week that Marcelo Bielsa’s side were battling the Bluebirds, West Brom and Wigan Athletic for the highly-rated Lowe, who shone as Pompey narrowly missed out on a return to the Championship this season.

The 24-year-old, who joined Portsmouth from Hampton and Richmond Borough two years ago, produced 17 goals and nine assists for Kenny Jackett’s side across 2018/19.

And the 2008 FA Cup winners are in no mood to let Lowe leave on the cheap despite suggestions that he could be available for a cut-price fee.

According to the Daily Star, Middlesbrough are also competing to bring Lowe to the Championship.

Opinion:

Jamal Lowe has been a revelation this season for Portsmouth and he is Kenny Jackett’s prized asset. At 24 he is coming to the prime of his career and he is sure to only get better.

He has a ‘Jamie Vardy’ aura around him because he has come through the non-league system, whilst also playing on the edge every time he steps out on the field.

I think, Championship clubs would be foolish to not target Lowe and I think a move to Leeds would be perfect as Bielsa would considerably improve the Englishman.

However, Portsmouth will surely be targeting promotion next season after coming so close in 2018-19. If they want to get promoted they can’t be losing their star players on the cheap so they should be demanding at least £4 million from the teams in the higher division.
