Charlton Athletic have been promoted to the Championship after beating Sunderland 2-1 at Wembley today in a dramatic League One Play-Off final.

Defender Patrick Baeur’s last-gasp winner sent the Addicks’ side of Wembley into ecstasy after an even game in the capital.

Sunderland took an early lead in the game when Charlton goalkeeper Dillon Phillips made a mess of a Naby Sarr back pass that trickled into the net.

That mistake shook Lee Bowyer’s side and they were nervy in the opening 20 minutes of the game but started to grow into it as the first-half went on.

They got their equaliser before the interval after great build-up play. Joe Aribo combined well with Lyle Taylor who played in a lovely ball for Rotherham United loanee Ben Purrington to slot home.

The game looked to be going into extra-time only for Baeur to pop up and send his side into the Championship.

Charlton were relegated to League One in 2016 and finished 13th and 6th in the previous two seasons before finishing 3rd in this campaign.

Their fans can now look forward to second tier football again at The Valley. Here is how they have reacted on Twitter to their promotion today-
