Leeds United losing Casilla could be on says local journalist

When it was first mooted that Leeds United were in the running to sign a keeper from Real Madrid there was a real feeling that this could be the cornerstone that secured promotion to the Premier League.

The Whites were on top at Christmas, leading the way at the summit of the Sky Bet Championship. Every side in the last 10 years leading at that point had gone up to the glamour tier of English football – the Premier League.

However, Leeds United cast looks of disdain at such statistics, laugh in the face of such certainties. These sort of eventualities seem to forget that there’s always a given that the Whites will ‘do a Leeds’ and fall apart…again.

That is exactly what happened and many fans were critical of Kiko Casilla, the €1.7million contract buy out arrival from Real Madrid. From rushing out of his area on a mission, getting sent off to not commanding his defence, fans were getting anxious.

This was amplified by his part in a mix-up with Liam Cooper that gifted Derby County their opening goal in the 4-2 play-off semi-final victory at Elland Road. Many began to vociferously point out that he’d succumbed to the ‘keeper curse of Elland Road’.

With calls for a replacement already thronging around the terraces and quasi-terraces of social media, there came this from Sun reporter Alan Nixon.

It was enough of a comment to really fire the embers of Leeds United fans who’d only the night previously been stoked with news of possible investment from the gas-rich state of Qatar.

At the moment it all seems to be of the ‘up in the air’ ilk when it comes to what will happen regarding Casilla and Leeds United. No-one knows for sure what will happen and how this particular scenario will pan out. Only the end of the summer transfer window, or a move before that date, will bring that sense of finality and closure.

However, in responding to a question on Nixon’s post from a Leeds United fan (below), the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay says that what is being said is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Hay is seen by Whites fans as ‘Mr Leeds’, with many not trusting anything related to the club unless it comes via him or Adam Pope. Even couched in ambiguity and uncertainty as Hay’s reply is, it will be taken seriously by Leeds United fans when looking at what might develop from Alan Nixon’s comment.

The fact that it is out there and in the open, with partial support from Phil Hay, is enough to have Leeds United fans talking on Twitter and airing their views. That will continue, it will run for a long time. Leeds United fans haven’t seen the end of this particular episode, nor have they had their final say.
