Peterborough United plot to sign Newport County defender

Peterborough United are plotting to sign Newport County’s Dan Butler according to a report from the Football Insider.

The 24-year-old has been at Newport since 2016 when he signed from Torquay United on a free transfer. He is coming off the back of his best season for the Exiles where he was a regular when they made it to the 5th Round of the FA Cup and made a worthy fight against eventual domestic treble winners Manchester City. He also led them to the Sky Bet Lague Two play-off final against Tranmere Rovers but his heart was broken after they lost in extra time due to a 118th-minute winner from Connor Jennings.

But with Newport not being promoted, Butler looks like he could leave the club. His contract is set to expire in the summer and after having such a good season with the Welsh club, he might decide that he can get a better deal from another club. This is where Peterborough are hoping to step in. They are very interested in signing him and could snap him up at the end of his contract this summer.

Peterborough head coach Darren Ferguson is reported to be a big fan of Butler and thinks he could be an important part of his team. Ferguson wants a squad that is capable of challenging for promotion and with Butler having experience of that, albeit in a different league, he could be a great signing for the Posh. But they will have to be quick as other teams may join the race to sign him.
